Really Me is a documentary that follows the coming out story of Megan, a transgender woman, and her family as they challenge conventional narratives about gender, faith, and unconditional love. We started filming this documentary as the story began to unfold in 2023. It was a risk to take on a project in real time, one that we didn’t have an ending for, but we put our faith in Megan’s authentic, relatable personality and our hope in the importance of the cultural and social content that to which this film draws attention.
We watch as Megan, her wife Kari, and their two children live out an unflinchingly honest narrative that extends beyond personal transformation, and holds up a mirror for all to examine the ripple effects of what it means to live authentically in a divided society.
After a year and a half of filming with Megan, a compelling narrative unfolded as she settled into her new life as a woman. Over the last 6 months, we have edited Megan’s transition journey into a film that is almost ready to be shared with the world.
However, we have reached the end of our resources to support this project alone.
We have assembled a team of some of the best film-finishing talent in the country:
-
Composer Sam has written Grammy-winning music for Disney’s Star Wars game franchise as well as scores for several of Kinetic Village’s previous films.
-
Michael, the sound designer, specializes in documentaries with credits like The Heretic and Seaspiracy.
-
Satoshi, master mixer and score recording engineer, has worked on movies like the Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All At Once and The Expendables.
-
Brian, our colorist, has worked on Bridgerton, Queen Charlotte and several Marvel Universe films.
In addition to paying for our post-production talent, we need to build a marketing campaign and support a year of festival and community screenings. From our early test screenings, we knew this film stimulated deep thoughts and emotions and sparked many conversations. As we head into a midterm election year, we believe that “Really Me” has an important place in the conversation about what kind of society we want to be.
We need to raise $150,000 to finish the film and submit it to film festivals over the next year. We invite you to partner with the “Really Me” team to help us finish this film. By supporting this project for at least $25, we invite you to screen this film early. If you can give more, there are other perks, including an exclusive online Q&A with Megan and the filmmakers, the opportunity for Producer credit and the satisfaction of knowing you helped share an authentic inspiring human story to a world saturated with misguided narratives and political spin.
